The Division believes that the safety of students is of the utmost importance.
- Due to the variances in weather and road conditions within the Division, the driver of each route is responsible for making the final decision on whether or not to op-erate on any day. The driver will consult with parents before making a final deci-sion.
- The following weather-related factors will be taken into consideration before making a decision to close schools or cancel a bus route.
- Temperatures, including wind-chill, that are colder that –45 C as of 6:00 am
- Severely reduced visibility (0.2 km or less)
- A combination of weather and/or road conditions that make bus operations unsafe.
- When the decision has been made not to operate an individual bus route, the driver will notify the Coor-dinator of Transportation Services, parents on that route, and the principal of the schools having stu-dents on that route.
- A decision to close schools for the day due to inclement weather shall be made by the Superintendent prior to 6:45 am, and the following radio stations will be contacted:

It is also on the front page of our website at http://www.lrsd.ab.ca/school/granum Check it out for information on school closures or bus cancellations during inclement weather. It is important to note that the current practice of announcing school closures on the radio and calling the principals of schools that are impacted will continue.
- In order to protect the safety of children who arrive at school during inclement weather, the Principal shall ensure that there is a responsible person at the school to look after their needs.
- Once students are at school, drivers are encouraged to leave them there until the end of the school day. However, the bus driver may decide to make an earlier return run. The decision to take students home early should be made in consultation with one or more parents, the Principal, and the immediate bus su-pervisor or the Coordinator of Transportation.
- When a decision has been made not to operate an afternoon bus route and to leave the students at school, all concerned individuals including parents, Principals, the immediate bus supervisor and the Co-ordinator of Transportation shall be informed.
- Each Principal must have a contingency plan in place to accommodate students over night, if weather conditions are such that students cannot return home.
- Parents are responsible for ensuring that their child(ren) is/are properly clothed for the weather conditions. A Principal or bus driver may advise a parent if a child is boarding a bus without proper clothing for the existing weather conditions.
