Behavioral Expectations and Processes

Granum School is known as 'The Little School with the Big Heart'. We value each and every member of our school community. In order to ensure the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of our students and staff, policies, procedures and expectations have been developed.

 Dress Code

While there is no formal dress code at Granum School, students are strongly encouraged to dress appropriately for their age and the school setting.  If staff deems clothing to be inappropriate or too revealing, measures may be taken.  Parents are asked to support the school in this matter.

 Classroom Expectations

Each classroom teacher will develop, in consultation with students, a list of reasonable expectations and relevant rules and consequences which are consistent with the philosophy of the school.  It is acknowledged that these rules and consequences may vary from classroom to classroom depending upon the subject area and different teaching styles.  These consequences, along with the classroom rules, are to be discussed with students and should be posted at all times in each classroom.

 Bus Discipline Procedures

  1. First report concerning misbehavior of a student by a bus driver to the school will result in notification to parents.  Students will be on probation for one week and will need to report to the office daily prior to school.
  2. Second report of misbehavior will result in a letter home to parents warning that further misbehavior will result in suspension.  A meeting between the bus driver, school administrator and student will take place to try to find a solution to the problem.
  3. If the misbehavior continues and is reported a third time, the child will be suspended from bus usage for a minimum of one day.  Parents will be notified in writing.

 School Discipline Process

Minor Offences:

Students are expected to live up to their responsibilities as outlined under “Roles and Responsibilities of Students”.  Failure to do so could be considered a minor offence.  Minor offences will be handled “on the spot” by staff members.  Students will understand where the difficulty arose and will be assisted in formulating more acceptable behavior for the future.  Minor offences will be given logical consequences.  For example, a student caught littering may be asked to pick up garbage in the playground.

Failure to meet these commitments is considered a major offence.

Major Offences:

Some examples of major offences are:

  1. Verbal/ Physical Aggression
  2. Disobedience / Defiance
  3. Vandalism

  3. Notification to reporting teacher.

Step Two – Second Major Offence

  1. Principal arranges a conference with interested parties and parents where the disciplinary process and behavior contract are explained.  All parties involved will discuss possible strategies and solutions to the problem.  **Students will not be allowed back into school until the meeting has occurred**.
  2. Principal, with parental consent, may refer case for more specialized assistance:  eg.  Psychologist, social worker.

Step ThreeThird Major Offence
